How long has Handyservices been in business?

Handyservices has been in business since August of 2008.  Darwin Hall (the owner) has been involved in the construction trades for 20yrs., since 1995, working on his own home as well as rental properties.

In 2007, Darwin attended Oakland Builder’s Institute and later obtained his Builder’s license from the State of Michigan. Being licensed insures that you, the homeowner, are getting work done that complies with code and also insures that if work is not completed correctly, you have certain protections and recourse backed by the State of Michigan.

Can the customer purchase their own materials?

We discourage the customer from purchasing materials. We can take care of everything from start to finish, which ensures you an efficient, timely outcome for your project — with the least disruption to your home.

Most problems arise with these kinds arrangements; wherein the client buys the materials and we supply the labor, because it can delay scheduling, the wrong materials may get purchased, or not enough supplies, defective materials, low-quality parts, missing parts, etc.

You still pick your own finishes, where as we handle the procurement of those materials.  You can sit back and relax knowing you hired the right company.  We put everything in a neat package for you and you can continue doing what you do.

Occasionally, we will allow the client to purchase their own materials only if they do it after we estimate your project.  This is so we can help make recommendations, help coordinate deliveries, and address any other issues before building.

What kind of license do you have?

As owner, I hold a Michigan Residential Builder’s license.  Handyservices, LLC holds an additional Residential Builder’s License.

Is a license really needed?

A license says that the person is trained and has passed rigorous testing related to their particular trade.

Some unlicensed people don’t complete projects to standards set by the trades in which they are practicing.  It’s really a shame; hiring someone based ONLY on their price should be avoided.  Here’s more information on the subject:  Is a License Really Needed for Home Improvements?

I have a very friendly pet.  Is it okay to let my pet be free?

Under no circumstances should you let your pets be free to walk around during the construction time we are at your home.

We are not responsible for your animal’s well-being, or them getting hurt on the job site.  We love pets, too; however, construction can be a very dangerous place.

What happens when we’re unavailable to be at the remodel?

We’ll make arrangements with you beforehand for this.  You can either provide a key to the door of the property in person, or leave the key in a lock box, or you can have someone (over age 18) to let us in to work for the day.

Are you insured?

Yes! It is very important for anyone contracting to do work at your property to have at the very least liability insurance — and at the far end, worker’s compensation insurance — because without any, if a worker is injured on your property without insurance, he could in-turn sue you for his injuries.

Do you offer written contracts or is a handshake agreement enough?

We NEVER offer verbal contracts! It is very, very important to get EVERYTHING in writing. This not only protects you, the homeowner, but it protects us. If someone offers to work for you and attempts to give you a verbal contract, this would be a red flag. Get it in writing for clarity of what is to be expected by all parties.

What happens when I notice a problem with my installation?

The sooner you let us know, the faster we can help resolve any issue.  We take pride in our work and we want you be completely satisfied.  After your remodel is completed, we will send a few follow-up emails to see how things are going.

We want to get your feedback about your recent project.  It’s also a good idea during this interaction to voice any problems and concerns you may have.

What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept check, cash, Paypal, Visa, Mastercard, and most other credit and debit cards.

What kind of fees do you charge for home services?

We provide complete home improvement services for a flat-fee price.  It is all-inclusive, based on an estimate of your project, with all labor and materials included.

Will you complete my project on time?

When we quote you a start and finish time to complete your project, we stick to it.  We understand that your time is valuable.  We get in, do the job, and leave the space perfectly clean when we finish.

The only scenario that can cause a project to not be completed in the original time-frame is if we find unforeseen issues in a wall or floor, like bad plumbing, structure, or wiring during demolition.  We will then advise you to a solution, the added time it will take to correct, and a cost to fix the problem.

We want you to be completely at ease with our services, and perhaps you’ll call us for your future projects, or simply refer us to your friends and family.

Do you do design-build remodeling projects?

Of course!  These types of projects may require drawings, plans, and permits to fully encompass the scope of work.  It really depends on the type of renovation discussed during the consultation.

Design and build projects are generated through our remodeling software, which is really neat, because you get to design the project and see it before it actually gets built in your home.  If there are things that won’t work in the design, we can adjust them beforehand.

What kind of warranty comes with your services?

We offer a 1 year workmanship warranty on labor; materials may be covered by the manufacturer.
