The finishing touch to a new privacy fence is a gate. Most people want a gate that won’t sag, and will last the test of time.
Many homeowners decide to install a metal gate like commonly found chain link fencing, because of the rigid nature of the materials. But sometimes the look of chain link will take away from the style of a wood fence.
To get a cohesive appearance, I like to build a gate that follows the style of the existing fence, in this case, a dog ear privacy fence.
For this latest project in southwest Detroit, I finished the installation with a custom built entrance for the backyard, using a panel cut to size.
The clients wanted a gate that would not sag, could be easily opened and closed, and matched the rest of the yard. They also requested wheels at the bottom.
When I began, I installed an additional post close to the house, using a combination of a concrete adapter at the base, which is secured with concrete sleeve anchors.
I then attached the upper portion of the fence post to the house with a large lag bolt, counter-sunk into the wood.
I then determined the width of the new gate. The two gate doors will swing outward from the yard, so I measured and cut the two pieces equally.
The hinges we use are heavy-duty, which will give the family many years of problem-free utility. On the inside of the gate we installed cables attached to the corners of the frame to prevent sag, and adjusted them accordingly. The metal cables are lightweight which will remove additional weight from the gate.
The entrance gate shouldn’t be as tall as the surrounding privacy fence. Therefore, I shortened the height so the occupants can clearly see out into the driveway, or they can look over into the backyard from the outside.
Finally, we put wheels on the bottom, a latch on the inside, and handles on the outside.
